TERENCE THE TURKEY – A HEARTWARMING TALE 

When I embarked on the journey of writing my first children’s book, I didn’t expect that my protagonist would be a turkey. But in hindsight, it makes perfect sense. A turkey—a bird that, by nature, cannot fly but still dreams of soaring high—is a perfect metaphor for what I hoped to convey. Despite limitations, there is always room for growth, hope, and, most importantly, for dreams. This is the essence of Terence the Turkey, a tale that follows a young bird who dares to dream beyond the constraints of his world.

The story began with a desire to create a character who would inspire children to believe in themselves, even when faced with obstacles. The central theme revolves around resilience, bravery, and the unyielding pursuit of dreams, no matter how unlikely they may seem. While the main character may be a turkey, the lessons he learns and the relationships he forms are universal, appealing to children everywhere.

A Family That Supports and Shapes

From the very beginning, the importance of family is evident. Family is the foundation upon which the protagonist builds his character. Naturally, it doesn’t go well. He crashes and falls to the ground, feeling humiliated and defeated. But this moment of failure becomes a turning point in his story. He learns that mistakes are an inevitable part of life and that what matters most is how we learn from them. There’s no shame in making mistakes, but there is immense value in reflecting on them, learning from them, and using those lessons to grow stronger. Through this experience, the protagonist discovers that it’s okay to fail, as long as you rise again with wisdom gained from the experience.

In another part of the book, readers are introduced to the Fearfeather siblings, Fred and Red. These two turkeys have never ventured beyond their backyard and are content to live within the confines of their small world. They are fine with their limited perspective and have no desire to see what lies beyond the fence.

But the protagonist isn’t like them. He dreams of seeing the world outside, of exploring the vast and wonderful world beyond the familiar. This chapter highlights a crucial lesson: not everyone will understand or support your dreams, and some may even discourage you from pursuing them. But that should never stop you from following your heart.

Through his interactions with Fred and Red, the young turkey demonstrates the power of dreaming big and staying true to your own path, even if others don’t understand your aspirations. The Fearfeathers’ small-world mindset stands in sharp contrast to his bold dreams, and he makes the conscious choice to continue pursuing his goals despite their lack of enthusiasm.
